Where to trek in Guatemala
One of the biggest attractions of Guatemala are its spectacular natural wonders. From rich jungles to towering volcanoes and dramatic black beaches, this is a country that really does have everything. And one of the best ways to enjoy the best of Guatemala is to go on an organised trek.
We’re going to bring you our pick of our favourites in a moment — but first some basic trekking tips:
· Always go on an officially approved, organised trek, especially in potentially dangerous areas like volcanoes or other remote places
· Don’t travel at night if you can avoid it.
· Wear sturdy footwear, carry a light waterproof and plenty of food and bottled water with you.
There are some remarkable treks to experience in Guatemala — so here are just a few of the very best.
Climb a (little) volcano at Ipala
This is the perfect volcano trek — not too tall, and with a gorgeously refreshing lagoon at the top to cool off in! This really isn’t very strenuous at all and it will only take you a couple of hours to get there at the most.
And despite our important advice above, this one is so accessible and easy to follow that you don’t actually need to hire a trekking guide. Follow the signs and don’t forget your swimming costume!
Scale Tajumulco volcano
A slightly more serious proposition this time — the highest peak in Central America. Tajumulco is stunning, and you’ll get to bag not just the summit, but also a glimpse of El Salvador and Mexico too, if weather conditions permit.
You’ll definitely need a pro guide for this one, and although it is a tough hike it is well worth the effort. It’s a fantastic way to get a lie of the land and a sense of the diversity of this beautiful region.
Hunt for the lost city of El Mirador
Yes, you can get a helicopter here. But that really is missing the point of this staggering city, hidden deep in the jungle. If you’ve been to Tikal then you might think you’ve seen enough ruins for one trip.
But trekking for five days through thick, intense jungle to reach the vast city of El Mirador is an unforgettable experience. You’ll encounter all sorts of wildlife (maybe even a jaguar, if you’re lucky!) and will be overwhelmed by your first sight of these spectacular ruins.
Make a splash at Los Amates waterfall
We love a good waterfall, and this one is truly one of the most incredible we’ve ever seen. Nearly 40 metres high, it plunges down the rock face into perfectly clear pools below.
Trekking to the waterfall is the perfect way to get there. You’ll arrive hot, sweaty and tired — and in just the right mood to strip off and dive in. It’s not a long trek, but prepare for a long day at the pools. Once you’re there you’ll never want to leave.
